THAT DAY
Sometimes I think
our strength has been taxed
To such a limit we can’t get it back.
His leaving has left our life devoid of meaning,
For there was not even a period of weaning.
It happened so fast, so quick, so clean,
All you could hear was your own heart scream,
“It can’t be true’’ someone has lied!”
“Elvis can’t be dead”—the whole world cried.
All radios and TV’s were on in every car and home,
Waiting, praying, hoping someone was wrong.
But at long last the word was released:
Elvis Presley, the King, was now deceased.
Still we fought it—we refused to believe it.
This is a cruel hoax—how could anyone have conceived it?
Then by the thousands we gathered at the gate;
It did not matter how long we had to wait.
Then there was the white hearse coming toward the drive;
My God—it must be true—he really isn’t alive!
But we must not leave—no, we will stay;
Surely they will let us in—they can’t turn us away.
And, sure enough, at the next day’s light,
They let us in—there he lay in his suit of white.
We would sob, we would sigh, and all who came would break down and cry,
Because they knew now, for the last time, they were telling Elvis,
“Adio’s Goodbye.”
